Political and Economic Situation
Primarily ethnically Uzbek and Tajik, Faryab province has been one of the more peaceful areas in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban after the U.S. invasion of 2001. Recent development projects in the province have focused on expanding the agricultural potential of the province, in particular the re-forestation of areas of the province that were denuded in the recent past. Like many areas in the north of Afghanistan, warlords and criminal gangs who flourished under the lawless conditions that pervade Afghanistan are still very powerful in the province. Warlords are reported to be heavily involved in land seizures and extortion, even going so far as to run their own private jails where prisoners are detained and tortured.
Two of the most powerful warlords in the province are Rashid Dostum and his arch-rival Abdul Malik. Dotsum's troops, despite Dotsum himself officialy being a senior member of the Hamid Karzai governement, has often clashed with soldiers from the Afghan National Army, and also with Malik's forces as they battle for control of the province and other areas in the north of the country.
Government
The Governor of the province is Amer Latif.
